Polyethylene is the most common polymer with an annual production share of over 90 million metric tons worldwide. After being discovered by accident in 1933, it has become an indispensable part of modern life. The first product to be commercialized was low-density polyethylene (LDPE) polymerized by free radicals. Shortly thereafter, new polymerization chemistries based on chromium catalyst and Ziegler Natta catalyst expanded the product's usage area. LDPE has gained a wide variety of uses thanks to its improved polymer performance based on new catalyst and application technologies. It has become an indispensable part of the power transmission, food packaging, consumer goods, electronics, household goods, industrial storage and transportation industries. In the light of the developments in technology, the functionality of polyethylene has continued to improve and polyethylene has been the area where natural resources oil and natural gas are used most effectively.
